The 166th Oxford v Cambridge University Boat Race - 4 April 2021
THE 2021 UNIVERSITY BOAT RACE
On Sunday 4 April the Gemini University Boat Race will be held on the River Great Ouse at Ely. Unfortunately, due to Covid restrictions, spectators will not be allowed at the venue but full coverage will be provided from 3pm on BBC1. Just as regrettably, but for the same reason, we shall not be able to host our annual Boat Race Tea Party. instead we shall all have to watch it on our own TV screens - live coverage starts from 3pm on BBC1.
The 4.89km (3.04 miles) course will run from just north of the Prickwillow Road bridge at Adelaide to just before the Victoria Street bridge at Littleport. The normal championship course on the Tideway is 6.78km (4.21 miles). This finishing point was the starting point of the unofficial 1944 war-time competition but that course was only 2.4 km (1.5m). On that occasion, on Saturday 26 February 1944, Oxford won by 3/4 length. There was no women's race that year. You can watch the British pathe coverage of the event below.
The women's race will start at 3:50pm and the men's race at 4:50pm.
This is the 75th staging of the women's race and the 166th of the men's. The current standings are 84 wins for Cambridge versus 80 for Oxford in the men's championships and 44 wins for Cambridge versus 30 for Oxford in the women's. Will Cambridge have a home advantage as CUBC's boathouse is at Ely. (Note: Cambridge recently amalgamated its boat clubs into a single CUBC entity, so CUWBC is no more). The men's race will be umpired by a woman, Sarah Winckless MBE, for the first time.
The Osiris v Blondie and Isis v Goldie reserve teams races will be run later in the year and will also be held at Ely.
