GlosCamSoc has formed its own book club. If you are an alumnus or alumna of Cambridge University and living or working in Gloucestershire and interested in joining our book club please use the contact form below to get in touch.

We now have eight members with an age range from the twenties to the eighties.  Degrees are from Engineering and Medicine to English and Norse Mythology and we are from a good mix of Cambridge colleges. We have held nine meetings in the last twelve months.  We take it in turns to host the meetings so, with meetings at about six week intervals, each member hosts about once a year.  The meetings are lively events.  While the literary aspect is the pretext, the meetings are social events with wide-ranging conversation, good food and drink and a fair measure of jollity!

In the last year we have read and discussed nine books.  Everyone offers a score out of ten before we discuss the book in question.  The average scores have ranged from a minimum of 2.80 to the highest so far at 8.57. Being centred on Cheltenham, we are conscious that the club doesn’t serve the whole of the Society’s area.  If anyone would like to consider starting a new group in another district, I will be very happy to pass on our experience in starting and running a successful club.  Just contact me using the form below. Also, if anyone is interested in joining the Book Club, please use the same form below, which will put you in touch with Roger Clarke who is the Book Club Secretary.

The books reviewed so far have been (figures in brackets are the average score out of ten given by our club members):
  • Good Behaviour by Molly Keane (n/a)
  • Home Fire by Kamila Shamsie (8.5)
  • The Book of Human Skin by Michelle Lovric (6.6)
  • Colour Bar: The Triumph of Seretse Khama and his Nation by Susan Williams (6.3)
  • Munich by Robert Harris (7.9)
  • The Strangler Vine by MJ Carter (6.0)
  • The New Life by Orhan Pamuk (2.8)
  • This Isn’t the Sort of Thing that Happens to Someone Like You by Jon McGregor ((6.9)
  • The Mistress of Spices by Chitra Banerjee Divakaruni (5.3)
